Common Antibiotics Used for Strep Throat Treatment

A streptococcal throat infection is an inflammatory disease caused by the pathogenic bacteria hemolytic streptococcus. There are streptococci in the throat of every person but in case of the depressed immune system function or a pathogenic increase of a quantity of these bacteria, they may cause an inflammatory process and affect microflora.

As a bacterial origin is a base of the strep throat, the treatment of this type of sore throat is impossible without the use of the antibiotics. A human may be a carrier within a long period transmitting the infection to other members of the family or other people.

To treat the streptococcal infection of the throat, the broad action antibiotics are used. A choice of the antibiotic depends on several factors: patient’s age, vulnerability to certain group of the antibiotics, and a type of an infection.

Antibiotics Used for Strep Throat Treatment

To treat pharyngitis and tonsillitis, penicillin and cephalosporin antibiotics are recommended: Cephalexin, and Amoxicillin (Amoxil). If a patient is diagnosed scarlatina, macrolide antibiotics such as Azithromycin are recommended.

Children are often prescribed Amoxil because it acts on various types of the streptococcal infection and is well tolerated than cephalosporin and macrolide medications. But if bacteria produce penicillinase, the efficiency of Amoxil will be probably insignificant, and Azithromycin is preferred in this situation.

That is why, before starting the treatment of the strep throat, a type of the activator should be detected. It may be done by means of the blood test or a throat scraping.

Amoxicillin 250/500 mg for Strep Throat: Efficacy, Dosage and Benefits

It is impossible to treat the strep throat without the antibacterial therapy. The streptococcal bacteria are spread rather quickly, so that a patient may have complications. The pathogenic flora may penetrate into the respiratory tracts and cause pneumonia, bronchitis, pleurisy, and others.

Many patients neglect the use of the antibiotics. Parents especially protect their children against the antibiotics, and the first signs of the complications appear within 2-3 weeks after the false recovery. That is why, if the disease does not have intensive symptoms, the use of Amoxicillin will help to avoid the development of the complications.

Streptococci are vulnerable to Amoxicillin, and so the strep throat therapy of light and middle severity goes fast. A duration of the therapy usually takes 7-10 days; if severe course of the disease, the antibiotic is taken for not more than 14 days.

Therapeutic regimen:

  • Adults and children over 12 are prescribed Amoxicillin in the dose of 500 mg 3 times per day, within 7 days. If the symptoms are improved, the dose may be reduced in 5 days of the treatment, and 500 mg is taken 2 times per day.
  • Children at the age of 5 to 12 are recommended to calculate the individual dose by the formula: 25 mg per 1 kg body mass. If the body mass is 36 kg, the daily dose will be 900 mg. It is divided into 2-3 times and given to a child with equal interval – 6-8 hours.
  • Children under 5 are given Amoxicillin in the form of suspension for better digestion in the gastro-intestinal tract. The dose is calculated according to the body mass.

The Amoxicillin use helps to relief the symptoms within 3-4 days. The first signs of the state improvement of a patient will be a reduction of purulence on the walls of the throat and tonsils, and a white coat.

However, these signs do not tell about a complete recovery and the treatment should be continued. The premature termination of the treatment may cause a resistance of bacteria to penicillin, and the repeated treatment will be ineffective during the relapse.

The benefit of Amoxicillin is a soft action and absence of the adverse effects in comparison with cephalosporin and macrolide antibiotics. So, it is indicated for the treatment of the infectious strep throat even in pregnant women who are contraindicated to take most antibiotics.

Chronic types of the streptococcal tonsillitis or pharyngitis are treated by penicillin antibiotics which are protected against the beta-lactamases. It is often Amoxicillin 500 mg + Clavulanic acid. This medical combination has a higher efficiency in comparison with common Amoxil pills, and is prescribed for severe types of the throat infection.

Besides the use of the antibiotics, a patient is recommended to use the additional products which will increase the efficacy of the therapy:

  • Antiseptic spays and solutions to rinse one’s throat;
  • Rinsing tonsils with an antiseptic product;
  • Antipyretic and anti-inflammatory products;
  • Vasoconstrictive substances to reduce a risk of the infection spread and pain in the throat.

Amoxicillin works well as the basic medication for the treatment of the streptococcal throat infections, and as a preventive product to reduce a risk of the infection of the respiratory tracts and blood infection.
