Signs and symptoms of sinus infection or sinusitis

Sinusitis is an inflammatory disease which affects paranasal sinuses. It is not an independent disease and appears during an infection penetration, or as a result of the allergic reaction.

A human has 4 paranasal sinuses, these are cavities filled out with air. As a result of the inflammatory processes in the sinuses, purulence appears, a human feels sick, fatigue, and difficult breathing.

Signs and symptoms of sinus infection

In absolute majority of cases, sinusitis appears as a result of the bacterial, viral, or fungal infection. If the sinusitis symptoms are neglected and are not treated, the disease may cause problems with vision, ear infections, and even meningitis – an inflammation of the arachnoid membranes.

In the clinical practice, sinusitis is classified into acute and chronic one which has various symptoms.

The symptoms of the acute sinusitis are as follows:

  • Nasal stuffiness within 5-7 days;
  • Severe discharges with purulence from the nose;
  • Severe expectoration with purulence in the mornings;
  • Severe headache;
  • Inflammation and pain in the sinuses;
  • High body temperature – up to 38°С and higher;
  • Edema around the nose and sinuses.

It is easy to distinguish the acute form from the chronic one. A patient has a high body temperature peculiar for a severe inflammatory process during the acute form. And if a chronic form, the body temperature is usually low, 37°С-37,5°С but it lasts for a long period.

Besides the low long lasting fever, the signs of the chronic sinusitis are:

  • Regular discharges from the nose;
  • Affection of the nasal mucosa: wounds, fissures in the soft tissues of the nose;
  • Dryness in the throat;
  • Constant headache and severity in the area of the nasal sinuses and eyes;
  • Bad breath;
  • Weakness, fatigue.

In case of the low immune function, the chronic form may become acute, so that the symptoms may grow.

Peculiarities of sinusitis symptoms in children:

  • Unlike adults, sinusitis in children is often latent, and it is more difficult to find out the symptoms. To do it, a complete diagnostics is required.
  • Otitis often causes the children’s sinusitis, and therefore pain and inflammation of ears may be a sign of the sinusitis development.
  • Unlike adults, children seldom have headache during sinusitis.
  • Sinusitis in adults often affects the sinuses on both sides. One side is often affected in children.

Children’s sinusitis is dangerous because the protective functions of the body are worse than in adult patients, and the disease may cause meningitis in case of the neglected treatment. The cavity where the brain is placed, is separated from the frontal, sphenoid, and ethmoidal sinuses by the thin bone. An infection may easily penetrate into the liquids and tissues surrounding our brain through this bone.

How to use Amoxil (Amoxicillin) for sinusitis treatment? Dosage and Tips

The sinusitis treatment needs a complex approach. The antibacterial therapy with Amoxil (Amoxicillin) is required to inhibit bacteria but the additional therapy including physiotherapeutic procedures are required during purulent sinuses.

Amoxil (Amoxicillin) for Sinus Infection

Amoxil is prescribed as soon as possible, during the first symptoms of sinusitis. These are: sinus infection, frontal sinusitis, and ethmoiditis. The disease diagnostics may also happen with the treatment.

Why the use of amoxicillin should be started as soon as possible:

  • First, it will stop the infection of the rest sinuses of the nose and relieve the course of the disease;
  • Secondly, it will reduce time required for the complete healing of the sinusitis.

A medical examination and diagnosing may take several days. Amoxicillin may be taken during this period, and so the process is accelerated and the pathogenic flora is affected.

Amoxicillin is one of the softest and safest antibiotics, and therefore it may be taken without prescription during the diagnosed sinusitis. The most important is to follow the instruction mentioned by a manufacturer or pharmacist.

  • Amoxil is prescribed in the dose of 500 mg 3 times per day to treat the acute sinusitis in adults;
  • The treatment takes less than a week but not more than 14 days;
  • The pills are taken every day with the same interval;
  • The interval between the use of the doses should be about 6-8 hours;
  • Food does not influence on the bioavailability of Amoxicillin, and therefore the pills may be taken during, and after meals;
  • If the adverse effects appear in the gastro-intestinal tract, the pills are taken after meals with a lot of water;

Do not take the pills with grapefruit juice because the juice may reduce the bioavailability of Amoxicillin, so that the concentration of the antibiotic in the blood will be lower than expected.

To treat the chronic sinusitis, before prescribing Amoxil, it is necessary to take bacterial inoculation and find out an infection agent. The chronic forms of sinusitis may be caused by several pathogenic bacteria or bacteria resistant to Amoxicillin. As a result, the therapy may be ineffective.

If bacteria are vulnerable to Amoxicillin, the therapy is started in accordance to the standard scheme: a pill of Amoxil 500 mg 3 times per day.

Amoxicillin for sinusitis

Besides the antibacterial therapy, it is necessary to have procedures to remove purulence from the nasal sinuses. If these procedures are not done, there is a chance of a relapse after the antibacterial therapy. The accumulated purulence may cause an inflammation and an infectious process again.

  • A lavage of the paranasal sinuses is done during the sinusitis of the middle severity. A special sinus-catheter consisting of two thin tubes is used during the procedure. A solution goes to the nose through them, and then all pathological content of the paranasal sinuses are sucked away.
  • In case of the severe type of the sinusitis with purulence, it is necessary to tap the sinuses and delete the rest of the purulence.

Please Note! Amoxicillin is useful during the sinusitis of the bacterial origin. In case of the viral types of sinusitis, the use of the antibiotics is contraindicated. Amoxil is ineffective during the viral infections, and the use of the antibiotics may lead to changed flora, causing lowering of the immune function and increasing the viral infection.

If fungal sinusitis, it is necessary to have the antifungal therapy at first but Amoxicillin may be used as an additional ingredient in case of the increased concentration of the pathogenic flora in the nasal sinuses. If the flora is not affected, and the concentration of the pathogenic bacteria is not increased, the use of Amoxil is pointless.

Amoxicillin dosage for sinus infection in child

Amoxicillin is one of few antibiotics which works for the treatment of sinusitis in children. Its benefits are:

  • Amoxil may be taken by newborn babies;
  • It is not toxic for the baby’s body and is excreted within 2-3 hours;
  • Amoxil may be taken in the minimal doses, and it is safe for children.

A therapeutic regimen of sinusitis in children does not differ from the regimen for adults. The difference consists in a dosing.

The Amoxil dosing for the sinusitis treatment in children depends on age and body mass of a child.

  • Children under 2: 20 mg Amoxicillin per 1 kg of the body mass per day. The daily dose is divided into 3 times.
  • Children at the age of 2 to 6: 125 mg Amoxil 3 times per day. A suspension is preferable.
  • Children at the age of 6 to 12: 250 mg Amoxil 3 times per day.

Children under 12 years, with the body mass not more than 40 kg are not recommended to take more than 1000 mg Amoxicillin per day. If the treatment goes successfully in lower doses, it is reasonable to reduce the frequency of the use of Amoxil – 2 times per day.

The antibiotic is taken every day, during 7 days, without missing any dose. If the dose is skipped, do not take two pills at once the next time. Follow the standard therapeutic regimen.
